it was dark and rainy when a car hit her and then took off, leaving the elderly lady on the street with broken bones and bleeding. after fighting for her life in the hospital, she died wednesday. >> she was like my companion. very close. >> reporter: she told wonders of the person behind the feel felt any remorse. >> the fact you chose to run away and not come forward, what kind of a person does that? >> reporter: the family now goes door to door passing out posters to neighbors, asking anyone who might have seen the gold four-door car to report anything that might lead them to the driver. >> got robbed for her life, you know? she don't deserve to go this way. >> reporter: a small memorial of candles and pictures as they pray for healing, answers and

justice. >> i was expecting my mother to be alive, but maybe she gives this bedroom space for what he or she did with her. >> reporter: in vallejo, justine waldman, kron 4 news. the highway patrol is on the patrol for people who are driving under the influence. it's part of a holiday crackdown. kron 4. how are things going? >> reporter: i'm landing near the toll plaza and chp released statistics of their maximum enforcement period that started at 6:00 p.m. on wednesday. let's look at graphics of those statistics. so far, the highway patrol said that statewide, 8 people have been killed in fatal collisions

this year. chp also said 662 people have been arrested for driving under the influence. last year, there were three fatalities and drivers charged with duis. here in the bay area, no fatal accidents and 50 dui arrests. in 2011, also no fatalities and 39 people were charged with driving under the influence. back live now, california's maximum enforcement period continues until 11:59 on sunday evening. for now, that is the very latest here in the east bay. pam? >> all right, charles, thanks for that. again, charles clifford checking in for us. traffic seeming to move right along. >> all right. we're tracking traffic as well here. check out the speeds on the map. you can see where charles was on the bay bridge. there are slow eastbound speeds. look at a closer look.

speeds of 0 to 25 miles per hour heading eastbound on the bay bridge. the problem starts here on 101, an accident near fifth street you can here heading to marin into san francisco can be a little bit problematic as speeds are slow there. 880, 580 in the east bay look good and continue to track the traffic this thanksgiving to and from their destinations. >> and tonight, we showed you the plaza. where are we starting? fast track moving good with no problems. golden gate bridge, traffic moving well northbound and southbound no back-up for those heading over for their thanksgiving dinner. the san mateo bridge, see what they look like.

san mateo bridge, no problems there. the traffic medium speeds moving well. no problems and you just heard from grant with an update on what was happening trafficwise. let's check in on the weather forecast into thanksgiving night. jacqueline? >> it was a very nice day out there today. let's look outside from the bay bridge toll plaza. very pretty sunset out there this afternoon. we're seeing a few high clouds, but that's not really putting a damper on the day. you can see a pretty picture as i mentioned. we are seeing rather mild conditions thanks to an area of high pressure in california driving the storm track well to the north. most of the cloud cover is staying well to the north and this is the way we're going to stay through the next couple of days. high temperatures this afternoon. we're in the mid 60s for the most part. current conditions in the low 60s for the most part and dipping down to 58 in san francisco. 58 in vallejo and 59 in livermore right now. temperatures are going to get

rather chilly through the overnight hours because of the clear skies and we'll see lower conditions all weekend. mostly clear skies overnight and then mild conditions. temperatures mainly 60s and low 70s but we will have changes into mid next week. we're going to take a look at your extended forecast coming up here in just a bit. shopping is becoming a bigger part of the thanksgiving holiday for a lot of people. stores are opening earlier and earlier hoping to get your money as soon as we can. we have team coverage. alicia will be at the stone and at the wal-mart with more. >> reporter: it's been a busy afternoon at this wal-mart at san leandro. it will likely get busier closer to the 8:00 hour. i want to go to video because i went to the store and inside, you can see all the things that will go on sale 8:00 this evening covered in plastic cellophane and it's in all of the sections.

starting nod against the saints in new orleans. according to sports illustrated, coach reportedly told both players of his decision yesterday, the same day he publicly would not name a starter and still not publicly. meanwhile, espn said alex smith has medically been cleared to play. however, greg roman said that's not the case. who do you believe? anyway, smith was limited in practice today. that concussion he suffered, you can see it back here on november 11th when the 9ers tied the rams. smith was having a very good season completing 70% of his passes for harbaugh and third best passer rating in the league for alex smith, but sidelined and kaepernick got his shot against the bears. smith still suffering from those concussion-related symptoms and the second year guy out of nevada was awesome.

kaepernick throwing for 243 yards, 2 touchdowns, no turnovers. beating 22-7. he liked enough to say he would go with the hot hand. right now, kaepernick apparently has the hotter hand. >> there's not going to be an announcement of the starting jobs. they both had the hot hand so to speak and we feel great about it. it's not one of those situations where you have the aging starting quarterback and everybody is claymoring for the quarterback. to me, it's the opposite of a controversy. everybody understands the competitive nature of the national football league and, you know, we'll make the best decision for our team. >> and that was coach harbaugh talking yesterday. >> alex smith certainly had a really great past two seasons. you can't take anything away from his talent. both of them.

the thanksgiving holiday, pretty nice this afternoon. we'll see more nice weather into the weekend. clear skies, mild conditions tomorrow in the upper 60s. warming into the 70s for saturday. cooling down into sunday, but still not bad with temperatures mainly running in the upper 60s over the next few days. the downside is chilly mornings. we see temperatures widely in the 40s tomorrow morning, but we do have the clear skies thanks to high pressure setting up over california in the storm track to the north and enjoy this for the next several days. chilly to start the day. temperatures in the 40s, but we're going to warm quickly into the 60s by noon. nearly everywhere in the 60s and even though in the 3:00 hour, widespread 60s and low 70s as well. we'll take a look in your neighborhood starting in the morning. temperatures once again chilly, low 40s for inland valleys. 37 in santa rosa and 34 for san

will be met by workers who are on strike. the wal-mart in san leandro, what's the situation like there? >> reporter: so far, the workers have not shown up this evening, but it's busy for the workers that are out tonight. they've posted up these fences to close off the front and if you come here around 8:00, you can see the maize you have to go through because they are expecting big crowds. those big crowds that come looking for the deals, but we talked about the protests going on. i want to go to the video that was shot, that was actually a few weeks ago in southern california. you can see the fact that these people are upset. these wal-mart workers here in this video. there's a nationwide effort of workers upset with the working conditions at wal-mart, so they have scheduled a protest this evening at 8:00, the same time things are expected to get busy at this wal-mart. but at this point, we have not seen those employees who plan

where you are at this morning? >> she's at home pregnant, so she's got some family there. i had to work this morning early, but i'm at work. not in line. >> reporter: in san rafel. >> an annual tradition in the bay area at an iconic san francisco church, a thanksgiving meal given to thousands of people in need at glide memorial church in san francisco and this year, volunteers say they are seeing a rise in the number of elderly people needing help. >> here's the san francisco struggle. fixed incomes. they're spending most of their money on housing and so we're really seeing a lot more seniors each and every year and that's always surprising. >> the tradition has been taking place for decades and this year, the church which is a san francisco institution expects to serve between 5,000

and 6,000 turkey dinners to go with the need. thanksgiving travel has been a breeze out there as we look at airport delays, none to speak of in san francisco, oakland and san jose. we look at high temperatures, it was a nice day. temperatures in the mid to upper 60s in the locations. it was 56 in redwood city. 55 in san rafel. 63 for san francisco. antioch and livermore. 65 also in san jose this afternoon. a live look outside from the golden gate bridge where we still see clear skies that means chilly conditions for the overnight hours. satellite and radar picture, you can see the clear skies thanks to high pressure that's building in, keeping the storm track well to the north and this is the way it's going to stay. several mornings of clear skies and chilly temperatures into the afternoon and we'll see mostly sunny skies, even warmer

for friday. saturday we'll continue the warming trend, but sunday, it's going to cool down a little bit. we'll have a look at your entire weekend forecast, plus changes next week with rain returning to the forecast coming up. a massive deadly pile-up in texas shuts down an interstate for hours. you can see the video right here. it's unbelievable. it happened this morning on interstate 10 in southeast texas about 80 miles east of houston, an estimated 100 vehicles were involved. two people were in an suv died. 120 injured. more than 50 people taken to area hospitals, look at all the wreckage right there. cars just piled on top of each other. these really large accidents. there were extremely dense fog at the time of the travel. lots of tractor trailers were involved in this chain reaction accident. the people who died were hit from behind in their suv by a tractor trailer. eastbound lanes where this happened were closed for more than 8 hours today.

right now, a cease fire is in place and holding between israel and palestine. in eight days of violence, at least four israelis have been killed and 160 palestinians died in the conflict. many civilians including women and children. damon has the story of a doctor trying to help the wounded while grieving his own loss and we have to warn you, there are graphic images that may disturb some viewers. >> reporter: residents peered down watching the ambulances. a rocket slammed into one of the office buildings down the road. shortly afterwards, the doctor who works here carries a small body. it's his two-year-old son. we were sitting at home, and suddenly, the loud sound of a rocket and all windows

exploded, he tells us. his voice quiet and awfully calm. my son bled from his nose. it was a head trauma. the doctors alive. consoled parents. we can't do anything but be patient. and this enemy of ours that kills our children, they will pay, he says. either in this life or the next one. outside relatives start to trickle in. their grief palpable. grief so many here know only too well. amidst the rubble, traces of the life that was. a street that bustled with activity now looks like this. there used to be a small fairly well known shop here that actually has branches

throughout the city selling wedding dresses, party dresses. there's a bouquet lying back in there in the rubble and in this case, the target of the strike was the police station behind it. those who used to shop here, it's an ugly reminder of what the future holds. those we talk to say if and when this ends, another will always loom. we stop at a school refugee center to see a family we met the night before. it was a frightening night, she tells us, but better than being back home. they're all saying there's so much they actually need. this family, at least, has not received any sort of aid at all and they need things for the baby, for example. milk, diapers and they spent the entire night sleeping on these flimsy blankets they happen to bring with themment

tonight at the bay ridge toll plaza with that location. charles? >> reporter: right now, i'm standing along westbound interstate 80 heading for the upper deck of the bay bridge. the highway patrol is out here and released statistics on the first day of what they call the maximum enforcement period which actually started on wednesday at 6:00 p.m. let's look at some video. i can show you these numbers. so far, the highway patrol said that statewide, 8 people have been killed in fatal collisions this year. chp said also 662 people arrested for driving under the influence. last year, three fatalities and 267 drivers charged with dui. here in the bay area, there have been no fatal accidents and 50 dui arrests. that's this year. in 2011, there were also no fatalities and 39 people were charged with driving under the influence. back live now, the california highway patrol's maximum

the same day he publicly bowl not name a starter, still hasn't. reporting alex smith has been medically cleared to play. he passed the concussion tests but limited today in practice and the 9ers offense greg roman said he hasn't been cleared. who knows? anyway, the concussion happened on november 11th when the niners tied the rams. smith had a good season completing 70% of passes, 13 touchdowns, third best passer rating in the league. the niners are 26-1 with him the last two years, but this guy, colin kaepernick, got his chance after smith couldn't go this past week in the second year player out of nevada, going for 243 yards. two touchdowns, no turnovers. you can see harbaugh with the niners beating the bears at 32- 7. they saw enough to say he

travel plans. we look into the weekend, the return travel will be just as easy because we're going to see clear skies and mild conditions through the weekend. temperatures warming even more tomorrow than today. even more saturday. we cool a little bit on sunday but still staying pretty mild. we are going to see cool conditions in the overnight hours and satellite radar picture. clear skies with the storm track being pushed well to the north. high pressure building over california. that's going to mean cool mornings and warmer afternoons. in the morning, we'll see temperatures running in the 40s for the most part. some places in the 30s. into the afternoon, the early afternoon getting into the 60s nearly everywhere and we'll see widespread 60s tomorrow with a few 70s mixed in. as we take a look at our temperatures in the morning, again, 30s in places like napa, fehr field. low 40s for vallejo. same thing in daly and oakland, but 70s and south bay.

national news. a massive deadly pile-up this thanksgiving in texas shuts down an interstate for hours on interstate 10 in southeast texas about 80 miles east of houston, an estimated 100 vehicles were involved. two people in an suv were killed. 120 injured. more than 50 people were taken to area hospitals. it was a mess. look at how big this area is. that's just one side of the crash. it was a chain reaction thing. police saying there was extremely dense fog at the time. several tractor trailers were involved. you can see them there. cars everywhere. the people who died in the suv were hit from behind by a tractor trailer, eastbound lanes which is where this happened were closed for more than 8 hours. we'll be back right after this. into their work,
